Radetzkymarsch German Edition Joseph Roth 9783954552320 Books Reviews
Roth wrote this really good historical novel about the decline of the Austrian - Ungarian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. Absolutely recommended!
Beautifully crafted, representing the rich culture of late 19th century Eastern Europe, at the same time introducing the ugly ghosts of the coming times. Nostalgic, kind, generous towards a people caught in the web of time.
handy worldwide due to kindle - always need to refresh on certain passages anytime
Radetzkymarsch is one of those books that I can read and reread and reread again. A timeless classic about the waning years of the Hapsburg empire.
Enjoy!
I don't really speak German, although I understand it fairly well. My father and his siblings were refugees from Hitler's Germany, and they spoke their native tongue all their lives. When I read "The Radetzsky March" in English, I thought I could hear how some passages might read in German. I imagined certain words and phrases and was convinced I'd guessed them accurately. I bought the book to read, in a stumbling way and with a dictionary, and had quite a big surprise. Roth wrote in what my father called "Hoch Deutsch" -- very high-level, literary German. The phrases I'd imagined spoken in the "kitchen German" of my childhood turned out very different indeed. Example when Col. Festetics and Lt. Zschosch are running down the absent Count Chojnicki, a servant suddenly appears and announces the Count in person. The translation reads, "A fabulous fellow!" I was sure that absolutely had to be "Ein fabelhafter Kerl!" Ach, nein. What Roth wrote was "Famoser Bursche!" I knew the adjective, of course, but never heard "Bursche" before. Perhaps it's Austrian?
Anyway, from what I can grasp of the German edition the novel is just as amazing as in translation. An absolutely immortal work. Anybody interested in WWI, or 20th century history, or Austria-Hungary, or just a coruscating and mesmerizing read, should check out "The Radetzsky March" in the language of his or her choice.
I started reading this book in English, then switched to German. Thus I came to a full realization of the excellent tranbslation of this book. Without it, much of the artful description of people and events in this slow moving story would be lost. It was my fist exposure to Joseph Roth's writing. I am glad I discovered this gem.
I'm not sure how many of the linguistic or cultural nuances come across in an English (or other) translation - or will be understood by the people of 2014 - but this is a must-read for anyone interested in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, one of the most multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious political behemoths to ever exist.
A classic read, this book is about human foibles set against the backdrop of the decaying Austro-Hungarian Empire. While the subjects of the empire live their lives the Empire recurs as a Leitmotif represented by the Radetsky March.
