Manly Hall is amazing! Anything written by him personally is a journey that you will not be disappointed in taking. This book is a nice reader's copy that lacks all of the bells and whistles that go along with the large hardcover copies. I love the Jubilee Edition (deluxe anniversary edition with full page illustrations and amazing lettering fonts) which I have in my library but when friends ask me about Many Hall, it is hard to buy them a $160 book to give them a good introduction. This edition solves that problem. All of the text is there but most of the illustrations, with the exception of where the text requires it, have been eliminated and the text size has been reduced but is still very readable. If you have been curious about Manly Hall, this is the book to start with. It is his magnum opus and very good primer to further investigation to a man who dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of the world's mystery schools.
I love ancient knowledge. This is a wonderful book. I am going to find a hardback for my coffee table. Many ancient teachings and sacred knowledge has been lost to time and to Man's undoing.
Deep reading and very wise. This is not an easy read. Old parameter. Manly Hall does a nice job of combining an awful lot of wisdom in small print. I really am enjoying sinking my teeth into this book. It is very good, as is all Halls work.
If you’re a student of the Western Mystery tradition, you’ll want to own this encyclopediac tome by the iconic Manly P. Hall. This book is not a perennial-philosophy type text along the lines of Aldous Huxley’s “The Perennial Philosophy”; rather, it is an encyclopedia that best serves as a reference guide to the Western Mystery tradition.
Because I plan to eventually write texts on Hermeticism, I decided I needed to revisit this tome, which I remember perusing at my chiropractor’s office forty years ago. At that time, the material didn’t particularly interest me because my orientation was exclusively toward Eastern spirituality, so I never purchased a copy. Now that it is available for .99 at and for free on the web, getting a copy is a no-brainer.
Positively, the book contains lots of information on arcane subjects that I have not encountered elsewhere. Negatively, when I read the material on subjects that I’m knowledgeable about, I was less than satisfied with some of the information.
The quality of this .99-cent edition is atrocious -- typos and spacing errors abound. If you want a copacetic copy of this book for your digital library, be advised that this particular edition won’t provide it.
ahh, if only there were NOT so many " secrets" we each have to search out. Some much misinformation has been
spoon fed to us. Make it your mission statement or add to your bucket list this promise to yourself. . . .I will go seeking
for myself.
Excellent book, and a must-read for any student of philosophy, history, or mythology. An expansive collection of the different schools of philosophy throughout the ages, their origins, notable characters, evolution, and influences on major civilizations. However, this edition contains no images, which renders it's descriptions and analyses of symbols and art almost useless. I suggest finding another edition that includes all of it's original illustrations. I will be buying an illustrated hard copy for my library.
This is a brilliant book. There is too much to it to go into completely, but for anyone interested in esoterica, occult and spiritual thought throughout history... it's truly amazing. I've owned a large hardcover copy for many years. As an author who enjoys doing copious amounts of research, this book has been an incredible tool for me.
The idea that you can buy the kindle version for $1.99 is a mind-blowing paradigm shift in and of itself. However, I'm giving the e-version 4 stars instead of the 5 that the book certainly merits (and then some), because of the formatting. I've read through a few chapters, and skipped around a bit (this book is made for referencing, not necessarily for reading straight through) to see how they handled the conversion. Frankly it's a mixed bag.
Plus - the table of contents works okay. Without a searchable ToC, this book would be virtually unusable. So that part is fine.
Negatives - the physical book is filled with illustrations - tons of them. The ebook has some illustrations, but seems to be missing the bulk of what's meant to be there. This is not a minor omission. There are missing charts and graphs and maps and many full page/ color images. Also, in the physical book, every illustration has a long caption - sometimes using multiple paragraphs to explain it in context - but whenever you come to an illustration in the e-book, it gives you the full caption without delineating any difference from the regular text. The effect is that the book seems to lose it's train of thought to start talking about random things in mid paragraph. This would make it very confusing if you weren't aware of what it was supposed to look like in its original form. Actually, it makes it confusing either way. Readable, but it takes getting used to.
All in all, I'd recommend that you get a physical copy of this book to really enjoy and understand it. But for a $1.99, this is still a treasure trove of goodness... you just might have to work a little harder to take it in.
